4th of July!

We celebrated the 4th of July in a slightly random style… driving all day from Memphis to Hays, Kansas…chosen as a good stopping place after 12 hours of driving! Hays did have a nice fireworks display, so we joined the locals down at the university to watch the show.

Memphis, Tennessee

We arrived in Memphis with one main plan – to go see Graceland, Elvis Presley’s home. I (Karen) had been there with my family, but it was Reuben’s first time. We found a campsite right across the road at the Graceland RV Park, and headed over to see the house.     We opted for…

Nashville, Tennessee

We arrived in Nashville, the home of country music.  We decided to walk into town, and headed in via the Bicentennial Mall, which gave us a great view of the State Capitol.     We also liked finding a giant map of Tennessee – here’s Reuben on Nashville.     Our main stop was the…

Biltmore and the Smoky Mountains

Leaving Charlotte, we went to Asheville and visited Biltmore House. Built by the Vanderbilt family, it is the USA’s largest privately owned home. Over several hours we toured the house, gardens, exhibits on the family and winery (free tastings were good!) Sadly we were not allowed to take photos inside the house, but it was…

Charlotte, North Carolina

After Wild Goose, we headed to Charlotte, North Carolina and stayed with Reuben’s good friend from India, Patricia.  We spent some time in Charlotte recovering from our camping, relaxing and reconnecting with Patricia.  We went with Patricia to the Billy Graham library – this is Billy Graham’s childhood house, as well as a museum that…

Wild Goose Festival

We spent six days at Wild Goose Festival, which we heard about when we were in South America and decided to volunteer at. Wild Goose is a festival of music, spirituality, art and justice…described by some as like a Christian Woodstock and held at a beautiful forest site in North Carolina. Their own website describes…

Piako goes to Hogwarts

Piako visited the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Orlando, Florida. He was very excited to see all the things he had read about.

Universal Studios

We arrived in Orlando, Florida, ready for 3 days of fun at Universal Studios. Universal Studios is actually two theme parks – Universal Studios and Universal’s Islands of Adventure (home of the wizarding world of Harry Potter!)  We spent our first day at IOA, our second at Universal Studios and our third split between the…

The roadtrip begins

We left Galveston and began our USA road trip! The first three nights on our trip were spent catching up with Reuben’s friends from when he lived in India.  Our first stop was Tyler, Texas, where we stayed with Danny and Lori and their family, saw the beautiful rose gardens and enjoyed some great conversation…
