Kinderdijk

We had really wanted to see some windmills in the Netherlands and our research had guided us towards Kinderdijk.  Kinderdijk is a collection of 19 original windmills in the south of the Netherlands – perfect to visit on our way to Belgium.  It’s also a UNESCO world heritage site.  We took a train to a nearby suburb of Rotterdam, where we had planned to leave our bags for the day – however we discovered that the advice we had read online about all train stations having luggage storage in or nearby was not entirely accurate!  We took our bags on the bus to Kinderdijk, figuring we could try to leave them at the shop or cafe there.   When we arrived, we realised that the winter season meant everything was closed – so we just embraced being backpackers for the day and carted our bags around Kinderdijk. Apparently in summer you can do boat rides and go into one of the windmills, but nothing was open – so we wandered in peace and enjoyed seeing the beautiful old windmills.  The path winds its way past three different types of windmill – we spent a couple of hours tranquilly wandering and really appreciating the quietness of being there outside of tourist season!

Looks very peaceful. And probably good that it was flat terrain given that you had to embrace being backpackers!
