Our day trip to Jungfraujoch started grey and dreary…not ideal conditions for taking the highest railroad in Europe up the side of a mountain! As we took a train from Berne to Interlaken and then up the mountain, the day continued to be bleak and we couldn’t see much of anything.

Once up the top in the complex called the “Sphinx”, we bought coffees and ate our picnic in the cafe…and then slowly the clouds broke, and we could see the incredible peaks of the Jungfrau, Monch (pictured above) and many other mountains. We spent over an hour going in and out of the observation decks, taking photos and admiring the beauty (and the cold as it was another -22 day!)

Once we had had our fill of mountains, we saw the underwhelming Ice Palace and some cute displays before taking a train down the other side of the mountain, through Grindelwald. This gave us stunning views of the north face of the Eiger mountain.

I did that trip in 1978, we stayed in Lauterbrunnen a gorgeous village in a valley with the Jungfrau and Eiger looming over us. We had a gorgeous day for our train trip up the Jungfrau and the scenery was stunning! So glad you got to see it too !
