On our second day we did a whole day game drive, leaving in the morning, driving across the plains towards the river, picnicing under a tree (where I asked obsessively about snakes) and arriving back at our camp in the late afternoon. One of the highlights was midmorning when we stopped away from all the other cars to watch a herd of elephants crossing the plains.  It was incredible to be alone in the reserve with the elephants.  In addition to more of the animals we saw the previous day, we saw lions sleeping in the grass with their cubs, giraffes, ostriches, crocodiles, hippopotamuses, baboons, waterbucks and dikdiks.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

On our last day in the park, we went out for an early morning game drive. We had no luck finding a leopard but we did come across a cheetah stalking his way through the grass – he crossed the road right in front of us! On our way back, Nelson followed a hunch and drove to investigate some movement…which meant we were the first van to find a lioness and her four cubs sprawled over the road, relaxing in the early morning.  We couldn’t get enough of this incredible sight!  It was a fabulous way to finish our safari before heading back to Nairobi to take an overnight bus from Mombasa. We booked our trip through Safe Ride safaris – of the eight quotes I got, they were the cheapest and guaranteed to go with a minimum of two people.  We would absolutely recommend them!  The camp we stayed at was basic but very comfortable – our room had tented sides but a concrete bathroom with hot water, meals were served buffet style in an open sided hall with views out to Masai Mara and the staff were friendly.  Our driver was wonderful – friendly, knowledgeable and a very safe driver.
