We decided to take ourselves from Fes to the Roman ruins of Volubulis.  We didn’t want to take a tour, as these ran at at least 800 dirhams for us both from Fes. We took ourselves there using a few different steps (I’ll write a separate post on this for anyone who is interested in the how to’s!)

We had a lovely walk to Volubulis from the nearby town of Moulay Idriss.  It was about 5km, but there were lovely wildflowers to look at on the way (as well as a friendly cyclist who stopped for a chat!)

 

 

We spent about three hours at Volubulis – we had our picnic lunch and strolled around the beautiful ruins.  Volubulis is interesting, as it was really a far-flung outpost of the Roman empire, and when they lost control over it to the local Berber tribes, they just didn’t worry too  much about getting it back (they figured it was a long way out and hard to defend).

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

A lot of the site has been restored – some of it apparently is not too close to what it looked like though!  One of the highlights was the gorgeous mosaics around the grounds – I have no idea how these have lasted so long, but apparently they have!  It was a full day mission to get here from Fes, but definitely worth it!
