Yellowstone National Park

We had an incredibly full day in Yellowstone National Park. Our day started early as we drove from Alpine to the south entrance of Yellowstone. Our first stop for the day was at the West Thumb Geyser Basin, where we walked around the boardwalks and saw some of the geysers and pools that are right beside the lake.

It all looked and smelled so familiar!

Our next stop was at the Old Faithful geyser where we joined the crowds and watched the geyser explode. We were lucky and only had to wait about twenty minutes for it to go off – it goes off about every hour and a half. After that we walked around the geyser area then headed to Black Sand Basin for a picnic lunch.

After lunch we drove along Firehole Canyon Drive to see the lava and the canyon it had created.

Our next stop was Norris Geyser Basin where we saw the Steamboat Geyser, the world’s tallest geyser.

Following that we headed to Canyon Village, where we went to the visitor’s centre and then drove along the canyon, stopping to see views of the Upper and Lower Falls.

After that, we drove along Hayden Valley looking out for wildlife. Over the day we saw deer, lots of bison (some literally on the road) and Canadian Geese (sadly, no bears).  We stopped at the Sulphur Cauldron and Mud Volcano before camping overnight at Bridge Bay at Yellowstone Lake.  There were very strong warnings about bears there – we weren’t even allowed to take water bottles into our tent! We had our coldest night yet of tenting – it went down to about 5 degrees Celsius.
